TOURISM IN THRISSUR
Thrissur previously known
as Trichur, is the cultural capitalof Kerala.
Thrissur city is built around a 65 acre hillock called the Thekkinkadu Maidan which seats the temple of Vadakkumnathan . This area is the city's
cultural and spiritual centre. Thrissur
is well known for the Thrissur
Pooram , the most colourful and spectacular temple festival in
Kerala. The festival is held at the Thekkinkadu Maidan in April or May.
Thrissur has a large number of well-known temples including the Guruvayur
Temple, Thiruvambady temple, Vadakkumnathan temple and Paramekkavu temple, as well as two famous
churches, the Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral and the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours (Puthan
Pally or New Church). Thrissur is also the venue of Pulikali during Onam festival celebrations
in the month’s of August or September.
Shakthan Thampuran Palace
Formerly known as Vadakkekara Palace , this palace was reconstructed
in Kerala-Dutch style
in 1795 by Ramavarma Thampuran of the erstwhile Princely State of Cochin, well as
Sakthan Thampuran. Can see Bronze Gallery where one can find bronze statues
belonging to the period between the 12th and the 18th centuries, Sculpture
Gallery displaying granite statues from the 9th century to the 17th century,
Numismatics Gallery, which systematically displays ancient coins, which were in
circulation in the former province of Kochi and neighbouring
kingdoms and the History Gallery depicting some of the milestones of theKochi dynasty and the
Epigraphy Gallery showcasing the genesis and evolution of ancient writings.
Vilangan
Hills
This 50 acre beautiful green area
is a popular picnic spot and recreation centre among the youngsters and old.
The hill, which is covered in thick bush, gives a panoramic view of the
whole Thrissur City from the top. From the top of the hill, one
could have the marvellous sight of thousands of acres of green paddy fields
intercepted by water-filled Kole lands, streams and villages below.
Archaeological and Art Museum,
Thrissur
The archaeological and Art museum
displays collections of the wood carvings, metal sculptures and ancient
jewellery materials. Museum showcases are the rare collection of paintings and
artifacts to create awareness about the architectural heritage of the state
among the public as well as the students.
Zoo
Zoo is Spread over an area of
13.5 acres of land and it is home to the
wide variety of animals, birds and reptiles. There is a special building which
houses snakes also. The zoo includes some of the rare and endangered varieties
of species. The variety of wildlife in the Zoo includes Elephant, tiger, lion, deer, sloth bears,
monkeys, hippopotamus, camels, Cobras, kraits, viper,
rat snakes and many other varieties.
Vallathol
Museum
The Museum is dedicated to great
Vallathol Narayana Menon, popularly known
as Mahakavi Vallathol, this museum exhibits most of his personal
belongings which he used in his life. Situated near the banks of Nila, this museum was the
residence of the poet who built Kerala Kalamandalam, a centre of training
in Kerala arts.
